History

The name is associated with the soft, cool and bluish shimmer of the moon. Moonstone is a variety of Feldspar which shows the phenomenon adularescence. Adularescence is the light that appears to billow across a gemstone, giving its surface a glowing appearance. This phenomenon is caused by the internal structure of the stones made up of alternating layers scattering the light that enters. Many cultures associate this stone with the moonlight. It is said that Moonstone brings luck and some even believe that one can see the future while holding a Moonstone in your mouth during full moon. In India, Moonstone is regarded a sacred and lucky stone. It is the stone of love and fertility and therefore still today used as wedding gift in India and Arabic countries.
